ACMA Chronicle (1996-2000)
1. June 1996, the 21st Century Eastern & Western Medicine Conference was held in South Illinois. Professor Zeyi Cao, Executive Vice-President
of the Chinese Medical Association, Mr. Jidong Huang, Consul General of the
Chinese Chicago Consulate, the Mayor of Springfield, the capital city of
South Illinois, and the Dean of Southern Illinois Medical School attended the meeting.
During the conference, Dr. Zeyi Cao announced the establishment
of the North America branch of the Chinese Medical Association (the later American Chinese
Medical Association). Dr. Zhenglun Zhu was appointed as the acting
chairman. Later on, the American Chinese Medical Association was registered as an independent
non-profit organization in New York (Reported by Overseas Chinese News,
July 15 1996).
2. January 1997, the first issue of ACMA Newsletter was published.
3. February 1997, the first ACMA administrative meeting was held at
Columbia University Medical Center, New York.
4. April 1997, the first ACMA Scientific Forum was held in New York
City.
5. May 1997, the first ACMA annual meeting was held at Columbia Medical
Center, New York. More than one hundred people attended the meeting.
6. January 1998, the first ACMA board meeting was held. The first panal
of elected board members attended the meeting. They were Dr Zhenlun Zhu,
President; Dr. Jianxing Chen, Vice-President; Dr. Delong Liu, Vice-President;
Dr. Stephen Tsang, Director of Science committee, Dr. Licheng Xu, Director
of Administrative Committee; Dr. Haoxing Liu, Treasurer and Secretary of
the Board; Dr. Yonghui Zhang, Secretary General; Dr.Guangxia Gao, Co-director
of Science committee; Dr. Maddie Hao, Co-director of Administrative Committee.
7. March 1998, the ACMA accommodated the Chinese medical delegation
of China Blood Banks and Transfusion Centers organized by the China Ministry
of Health.
8. May 1998, the ACMA held a community medical consultation "Bridge
to a
Healthier world" at Boston China Town.
9. May 1998, the ACMA held a science conference in Boston.
10. May 1998, the ACMA set up its official website: http//www.acma.org.
11. June 1998, ACMA New England chapter was established. Dr. Jiangxing
Chen was elected as the President of the ACMA New England Chapter.
12. June 1998, ACMA New England chapter co-organized a scientific conference
"Inter-phase between Clinical Medicine and Basic Medical Science".
Over three hundred physicians and scientists attended the meeting.
13. June 1998, the ACMA held a science forum in New York City.
14. June 1998, the ACMA Boston welcomed the Chinese medical delegation
headed by Dr. Jieping Wu, Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Medical
Association.
15. August 1998, the ACMA headquarters and its New England chapter sponsored social medical consultation "Medicine, Science and Career" at Hopkinton
State Park, Massachusetts. Over 200 people attended the activity.
16. August 1998, the first ACMA annual journal "Bridge to a Healthier
World"
was published. 17. September 1998, ACMA New York chapter was established. Dr. Delong
Liu was elected as the President of the ACMA New York Chapter.
18. October 1998, invited by the Chinese National Science Foundation,
seven ACMA scientists and physicians attended "The 3rd National Life Science
Conference of China".
19. October 1998, invited by Dr. Debing Wang, President of Beijing Medical
University, six ACMA delegates, headed by President Zhenglun Zhu and Vice
President Jiangxing Chen, visited China. They visited health organizations
in Beijing, Xi'an, Chendu, Chongqing, Shandong, and Fujian. They also signed
collaboration agreement with Beijing Medical University, Peking Union Medical
College, Chinese Academy of Medical Science, Huaxi Medical University,
and Zhongshan University.
20. October 1998, ACMA delegates was welcomed by the CPPCC Education/Science/Cultural/Health
Committee and the Liaison Bureau for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Oversea Chinese at the CPPCC Hall.
21. October 1998, the ACMA delegation met with the officers from Department of International Cooperation, Department of Education, and Policy Study
Center of the China Ministry of Health.
22. October 1998, six ACMA delegates visited the Life Science Department
of the Chinese National Science Foundation and the Chinese Medical Association.
They exchanged ideas on collaboration and other topics of mutual interest.
23. November 1998, Dr. Zhenglun Zhu visited Beijing Ditan Hospital of
Infectious Diseases, Chaoyang Hospital and International Department of
the China Daily. He discussed with officers from these organization on
issues of cooperation in health related fields.
24. March 1999, celebration of the first anniversary of the ACMA official
registration in Boston.
25. April 1999, the online journal " ACMA Medical Forum" was published
on the ACMA web site, the www.ACMA.org.
26. July 1999, the ACMA held " Traditional Chinese Medicine and Life
Science Forum" in Boston.
27. August 1999, ACMA Medical Committee was established.
28. September 1999, ACMA annual meeting was held in Columbia Medical
Center at New York. Over 200 Chinese and American scientists, physicians,
and officers in health related fields attended the meeting. Twenty feature speakers
gave thetalks and more than hundred posters were posted at the meeting.
Attendees also include representatives from WHO, AMA, CMA, China's State
Drug Administration (SDA), the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic
of China, Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in New York,
China National Medical Import and Export Corporation, Institute of Preventative
Medicine Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering,
Dean of College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University.
29. September 1999, the ACMA invited the crew of the Oversea Medicine
Program of the CCTV channel 4 to visit the ACMA in US.
30. September 1999, the ACMA Southern California was founded.
31. November 1999, the ACMA delegation of 15 physicians visited China.
During their 11 days of visit, the ACMA delegates saw more than 3000 patients
and gave more than 20 lectures. The ACMA delegates were warmly welcomed
by people of Beijing, Fuzhou, and Sichuan Province. During the visit,
the ACMA signed cooperation agreements with 8 Chinese health organizations
including Beijing Overseas Medical Exchange Association and Fujian chapter
of CMA.
32. On November 26, 1999, the ACMA presented the practice of Evidence-Based Medicine in the United States at China Ministry of Health. Followed
the presentation and discussion, with the facility of the China Ministry
of Health, the ACMA signed an agreement with the CMA on editing the Clinical
Guideline of Practice of Evidence Based Medicine in China.
33. On January 3, 2000, CCTV international (CCTV-4) broadcasted a special
report on the ACMA for half hour.
34. February 2000, ACMA medical seminar on latest status of treatment
of asthma was held at Boston.
35. March 2000, the ACMA officers discuss with professors Robert Fletcher
and Richard Bail of Harvard University School of Medicine on issues related
to practice of Evidence-Based Medicine and training of Chinese physicians.
36. June 2000, the ACMA held a meeting in Boston to discuss technical
issues related to editing the brochure of Evidence-Based Medicine.
37. September 2000, the ACMA Middle-West Chapter held a steering meeting.
38. September 2000, the ACMA Michigan Chapter was founded.
39. November 2000, the ACMA organized a large scale medical consultation
at MIT. More than 200 people from Boston area were benefited from the activity.
40. December 2000, the ACMA invited ten medical delegates from Beijing.
Seven of them are presidents of well-known hospitals in Beijing area.
41.In January 2001, Dr. Zhenglun Zhu, President of the ACMA, and Dr.Zhixiang
Shen, Director General of Department of International Cooperation, State
Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, discussed about future
collaboration between the two organizations.
